How United Nations Works ? Goals, Committees & Functioning

The United Nations or the UN is an international organisation which works for the international peace and security of all nations and gives them a chance to put forward their interests in front of other countries. Read on to learn more about the United Nations.

The United Nations was formed after the world war two on the 24th of October 1945. As the effects of the second world war faded, the need for an international organization which could help maintain peace and security was felt. The United States, the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom came up with a solution, they decided to meet and compile all their ideas into a charter which would form the basis of the United Nations. Later in 1945, the charter was signed by fifty-one nations at San-Francisco. This formed the basis of the United Nations

GOALS OF THE UN

The primary goal

of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security of the world. Though the United Nations also works for the following :

  • The UN aims to eradicate poverty, hunger and achieve universal primary education.
  • UN also aims to establish conditions in which respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained.

COMMITTEES OF THE UN

So, to accomplish the goals mentioned above, the United Nations has to have special committees or groups to discuss on special agendas. Each committee deals with a different topic area, meaning that each committee will focus on a different aspect of the society. To supervise each committee, their is a board of directors. We will discuss this topic in detail in the next section.

FUNCTIONING OF THE UN

The head of the United Nations is called the secretary general, his job is to supervise the UN and address countries about the problems the world is facing and recent crises that have had an impact on the world. He also

heads the secretariat who is like a board of directors running the show. Each committee is also run by a board of directors on different posts who are elected during the General Assembly meet where all the countries vote for them. António Guterres is the current secretary general of the UN.

THE CONCLUSION

The United Nations is actively involved in resolving conflicts between nations and working for betterment of the individual citizen. The UN also works to curb child labor and other problems which  threaten world peace and equality. Currently the hot topic of the UN is terrorism, the middle east is completely bombarded with speeches by diplomats in the UN who are trying to figure out a way to fight it. The United Nations who is trying to help countries is not able to get every bit of it's help because they have to respect the sovereignty of every nation and are not able to force governments to take decisions which are good for the world. So, the bottom line is that United Nations is a union, if it's members don't co-operate with it, the UN won't be able to do what it wants to and the change which we want to see will be slow.
